About Portsmouth Festival Choir
Portsmouth Festival Choir, recognised as one of the top Choral groups in the region, gives at least three major concerts annually, joined by soloists, orchestral musicians and accompanists of the highest calibre. Its aim is to provide a stimulating musical experience for its members and for its audience in the Portsmouth and Hampshire area.
Portsmouth Festival Choir prides itself on being a welcoming, friendly and accessible group. It is committed to continue striving for musical excellence. It aims to integrate with the overall musical life of the local community and widen its audience.
Activities and opportunities
Sing in a choir: Enthusiastic singers are invited to join Portsmouth Festival Choir which is said to be good for your health and well-being. No subscription payable for the first term. Portsmouth Festival Choir gives regular concerts and other choral events – see our website.
Bursaries available to young singers: Bursaries are offered to young student members to cover the cost of the annual subscription.
Work with professional musicians: The Musical Director of Portsmouth Festival Choir is a professional musician as is his deputy and the accompanist of the choir. For the regular concerts, the choir engages professional soloists and instrumentalists to ensure a high standard of performance.
Improve vocal technique: In the weekly rehearsals, the Musical Director helps choir members achieve the tone and style of singing required for the particular choral work under rehearsal.
Increased knowledge of the classical choral repertoire: The choir performs most of the standard choral repertoire from the Baroque masters to the 21st century, occasionally exploring less familiar music by living composers such as Malcolm Archer, Andrew Carter, Cecilia McDowell and Alex l'Estrange.
