National Youth Jazz Orchestra

  • Portsmouth Guildhall Guildhall Walk Portsmouth, PO1 2AB United Kingdom (map)

Presented by the Portsmouth Cultural Trust

NYJO is world-famous as a glittering showcase for the country's best young jazz musicians. Since NYJO's founding, by Bill Ashton OBE in 1965, most of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks, often becoming established jazz stars whilst still playing with the band.

One of NYJO's aims is to share the talents of exciting young players with as wide a potential audience as possible. Classics from the big band canon sit alongside specially commissioned new arrangements by band members and leading contemporary UK composers. From hard-swinging rhythm section to a raft of hugely talented young soloists, this is a big band in fine form.

Early Bird Tickets £8. Under 18's and 65+ tickets are available for £5 (Booking fees apply). School and discount offers are also available, please contact hayley.reay@portsmouthguildhall.org.uk

Exciting Pre-show event for schools/music groups and young people

Now in its 50th year, NYJO is firmly established as a training ground for the next generation of UK jazz stars. If you've ever fancied finding out more about the jazz, then join us from 5.00pm to 6:30pm where Music Director, Mark Armstrong and the orchestra will guide through the anatomy of the big band - explaining and demonstrating the different sections and their roles.  Plus, of course, you'll get the chance to join in and experience the thrill of improvising jazz together, if you would like to bring along an instrument!

If you would like to book a place for the pre show event, please email: hayley.reay@portsmouthguildhall.org.uk or call 02393 870 193.

Whilst the pre-show event is free with a valid show ticket, we will have our charity donation bucket out, for which we would be grateful of any donations, to enable our Guildhall Participate programme to keep delivering this work.
